The Construction JobMATCH programme was developed as part of an ongoing initiative to create jobs for local people in Sheffield, particularly the long-term unemployed and hard-to-reach individuals.

It came about as a result of Sheffield City Council’s declared commitment to underpinning economic development with social inclusion methods. They decided to invert the traditional employment programme model by acknowledging the requirements of employers and prospective employees, rather then adhering to centrally-planned requirements of mainstream public funding bodies and training providers.
Phase 1 of the programme is already surpassing national averages in terms of trainee retention, engaging minority groups, reaching people in the most deprived areas, and achieving successful qualification.
