Black Country as Urban Park
RegenWM Learning Laboratory
This Learning Laboratory was created by Regen WM, the Regional Centre of Excellence for the West Midlands. It is focused on the area known as the Black Country, which includes the Boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and the City of Wolverhampton.

The Black Country, West Midlands possesses a hidden beauty with its network of canals, green spaces and local histories, forming a strong and interesting heritage and landscape. Yet the area faces complex regeneration challenges, responding to trends of outward migration, low skills levels and environmental degradation.

In response, a thirty year plan – the Black Country Study - has been set, which will require leadership and partnership to translate it into vision. ‘Urban Park’ is the name given to the plans for environmental, economic and community transformation and is the subject of a Big Lottery bid, known as the ‘People’s Millions’.

RegenWM, the Regional Centre of Excellence in Regeneration, devised a ‘Learning Lab’ progamme to assist with generic skills development. The aim was to introduce partners to the good practice possibilities surrounding ‘Urban Park’ through a mix of action learning sets, coaching, and masterclass and stakeholder events.
